LA Confidential Film Review

Los Angeles; A Rollercoaster ride of thrills

Set in 1950’s LA, where police immorality, corruption, prostitution and gangster mobs are at their highest. LA Confidential directed by Curtis Hanson is a tense, thrilling and twisted crime drama focusing on three very different LA cops who are drawn together in this dark story to solve a murder. Everyone in the showbiz lifestyle of Hollywood is a suspect!

The story starts in the heart of Hollywood at a downtown LA diner, where there has been a gangster style shoot out, in which it has left many dead. Bud White (Russell Crowe) a tough nut cop, who’s very strict and violent on men who beat their partners is devastated when he discovers his ex-partner has been caught in the middle of this atrocious and brutal mess. We then have Ed Exley (Guy Pierce) a man who keeps to the rules and is seen as a character of contrast to Bud White. Last of all we have Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) a man who loves to be in the limelight, and doesn’t mind being a corrupt bad cop, if it means he can be on the cover of famous magazine “Hush-Hush”.

LA Confidential gives us that gritty, edgy feel and it has traces of a classic film-noir, especially the three diverse and divergent cops in their sleek and smart suits which is topped off with plenty of cigarette smoking. Some of the gunfights through out the film are very tense and fast paced, which is perfect as it has you gripping on to your seat and wiping the sweat of your very anxious hands through out the whole film.

Curtis Hanson has very cleverly constructed everything and it almost feels as if you are following one of these cops as their partner. The violence is balanced out by Lynn Bracken (Kim Basinger) the woman that has the attention of many, but especially Bud who especially shows an eye for her.

LA Confidential really is a film for everyone; male or female. It is thrilling and exhilarating from start to finish and if you do like your crime dramas, I can’t recommend it enough! Even if you’re not a fan of the genre, it is definitely worth a watch, as it will have you hooked and leave you breathless when you reach that 138th minute.

Extremely entertaining, Curtis Hanson really has done well with this film and the next time you happen to see a police man, just pray that it isn’t Bud white.
